Reporting
Countries that ratified the United Nation Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) are obliged to report on the implementation of the Convention at various levels and to submit national reports to the UNCCD Secretariat in accordance with defined dynamics and planned reporting cycles. Reporting is meant to assists Parties in developing and improving their monitoring systems at national level, but also allows them to share their knowledge and experiences with other stakeholders.
At the 13th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 13) in September 2017, Parties adopted a new strategic framework for implementing the Convention for the period 2018-2030. Under the new UNCCD 2018-2030 Strategic Framework, Parties will report on the progress towards five strategic objectives related to the condition of ecosystems and populations, drought, global environmental benefits and the mobilization of financial and non-financial resources to support the implementation of the Convention. The progress towards the strategic objectives will be measured through indicators: trends in land cover, trends in land productivity, and trends in carbon stocks above and below ground, which also be used for monitoring Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) processes and in particular SDG target 15.3.
Country Parties report to the UNCCD using the online portal – The Performance Review and Assessment of Implementation System (PRAIS). The PRAIS portal is constantly updated and will continue facilitating future UNCCD reporting processes. Other reporting tools, such as templates and manuals, are available to assist Parties in submitting their reports in a timely manner.
Reporting timeline is available here.
All UNCCD reports can be viewed on this page.
Information received from all country Parties are analyzed by the Secretariat of the Convention. On the basis of analysed and compared data and values, actions are undertaken on global level in order to improve the fight against soil degradation in the world. The Secretariat, in collaboration with the Global Mechanism of the UNCCD, is developing reporting tools that are in line with future requirements and strategic framework.
