Raising awareness on soil protection through educating the youth
With active participation of its youngest population, the World Soil Day (June 5) was marked in Serbia in the scope of the project “Enhanced Cross-Sectoral Land Management through Land Use Pressure Reduction and Planning” implemented by the Serbian Environmental Protection Agency in cooperation with the UN Environment Program, NGO fea and the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The World Soil Day was observed during the Science Festival that took place on December 14-17, 2017.
The visitors of the Science Festival had an opportunity to take part in various interesting and educational activities such as lectures on soil protection and numerous interactive workshops intended for young people aged 7-25. The children were presented with the crucial role that soils have in food security, water purification, climate regulation and delivering other ecosystem services that enable life on Earth.
Through play and fun, the young people learned about what organisms lived in soil and what are the proper ways of disposing packaging waste, why healthy soil is the root of a healthy food and what each one of us can do to protect it. They were also introduced to soil sampling and testing equipment.
The topic of the World Soil Day 2017 was “Caring for the Planet Starts from the Ground.”
