The Institute of Soil Science is one of the oldest scientific and research organizations in Serbia. The Institute’s main activities are related to:

Geological Survey of Serbia examines surface soil and deeper parts of the Earth, mineral goods and groundwater according to the established plan and modern scientific methods and performs tasks related to geochemical studies of the environment (soil, water, air and rock studies) and the production of geochemical and geoecological maps; investigation of processes and phenomena of geohazard (landslides, earthquakes, floods, etc.); research in order to assess the necessity and recommendations of methods for improving (remedial) degraded media (soil, water, air); analysis of minerals; development of basic engineering-geological maps as a basis for spatial planning, mining activities, development of urbanization and infrastructural facilities.

The Faculty of Forestry of the University of Belgrade is an educational and scientific research institution. Dominant feature of the Faculty is the existence of four segments: the Department of Forestry; the Department of TMP (Technology, Management and Design of furniture and Wood Products); the Department of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture and the Department of Environmental Engineering in the protection of soil and water resources.

 

The main topics of research are areas that are also determined as priorities at the EU level for the period from 2014 to 2020, which will serve as the basis for involvement in international projects, primarily through the “HORIZON 2020” program. Suitable research topics are also contained in programs implemented by IUFRO, GEF; UNEP, UNDP and FAO. The Faculty of Forestry of the University of Belgrade has been recognized as one of the key institutions in Eastern European countries in implementing the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

The Institute is a state company operating under the auspices of the Ministry of Science and Technological Development. Numerous breeding programs and efficient extension service place the Institute in the forefront of the Serbian and international agricultural science. The fundamental and applied research programs are primarily centered on the development of field and vegetable crop cultivars including forage and industrial crops, medicinal plants and spice herbs. The breeding programs place emphasis on high yielding capacity, tolerance to major diseases and resistance to unfavorable biotic and non-biotic factors. Work on special-purpose cultivars receives due attention. In addition to the breeding of new cultivars, the Institute provides a complete production technology for each cultivar. In short, the Institute’s extension service provides farmers with superior seed and detailed recommendations for soil preparation, other cultivation practices and crop protection measures.

Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad is a scientific and research institution whose mission is to stimulate high-quality educational processes, development of scientific disciplines and dissemination of knowledge gained in economy and society. The Faculty has developed study programs preparing students for the existing and pending technical-technological, and socio-economic systems.
