Two unsanitary landfills in Serbia cleaned up
Consultations With Key Stakeholders During the Implementation of the Project “Enhanced Cross-Sectoral Land Management Through Land Use Pressure Reduction And Planning”
Within the project „Enhanced Cross-Sectoral Land Management through Land Use Pressure Reduction and Planning“ over the past five months, regional non-governmental network FEA (Forestry and Environmental Action) identified and carried out consultations with target stakeholders in order to gather information on the current state of land management in Serbia, as well as to gather information on environmental issues related to the process of sustainable land management (SLM) at municipal and national level.
On this occasion 14 experts from relevant national and regional institutes and faculties were interviewed. The feedback from 35 local self-governments in northern, western, eastern and central Serbia has been obtained. Project team selected the pilot local self-governments with the potentially contaminated or contaminated land caused by the previous or current industrial activity, mining process, wind and water erosion and improper treatment of agricultural land. These 8 towns and municipalities (Bor, Krusevac, Trstenik, Kraljevo, Zrenjanin, Kikinda, Novi Sad and Obrenovac) were visited together with representatives of Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection, Serbian Environemental Protection Agency, Serbian Institute of Geology, Republic Environmental Protection Inspection and Belgrade Institute for Public Health Protection – Center for Ecotoxicology. In addition, 15 environmental CSOs were contacted.
One of the project’s deliverables is the Best Practice Guideline for Sustainable Land Management in the Municipalities in Serbia which will significantly contribute the improvement of current sustainable land management and land use policies and practices in municipalities/cities especially through integration of ecosystem services approach in to local land planning.
The project „Enhanced Cross-Sectoral Land Management through Land Use Pressure Reduction and Planning“ is financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and have been implemented by United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) Office in Vienna in a partnership with Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection, Serbian Environmental Protection Agency and regional non-governmental network FEA (Forestry and Environmental Action).
